The Croatian Truffle Institute fosters the recognition of the Istrian truffle by means of recognisable and unique labels, enabling truffle enthusiasts and consumers all over the world to verify at any moment that the truffles marketed by members of the Institute come from Istrian habitats.
The particular characteristics of the truffle are determined by its habitat and – more specifically – the symbiont tree on whose root it grows. Therefore, the specific characteristics of the truffle, such as the species, unique smell, aroma, colour and texture, are connected with the origin of the truffle, namely its habitat. Those specific characteristics make the truffle Istrian and recognisable in the world, which is particularly true for the white Istrian truffle (Tuber magnatum Pico).
