Truffles must be extracted carefully and in adherence to the rule of the least possible intervention on the part of the truffle hunter in the habitat while extracting the truffle from the soil. That means the hole must be no deeper than necessary, that the roots of the tree must be preserved and, finally, the truffle hunters have an ethical and professional responsibility to return both the soil and remains of the mycelium into the hole so that the mycelium may decompose there and encourage the growth of a new truffle. The truffle must be extracted using an appropriate scoop in the least aggressive manner possible.
